The Secrets of Arne is a new monthly event for 2022. Each month we will be taking a seasonal topic and unravelling some of the work that goes on unseen by the public. The warden and visitor team will deliver this event with many of them taking place on areas normally closed to the public. For January we are looking at Migrating birds. Our temporary feathered visitors are one of Arnes not-so-secret highlights and during January our salt marshes and mudflats are awash with a huge variety of birds. Come and learn more about the birds making their incredible migration to Arne every year. Join our expert RSPB guides for a walk down to our rich mudflats where you’ll learn about the species we see here and discover just why Arne is so important to so many birds every winter. Along the way we will look and listen out for winter arrivals such as redwing, fieldfare, and brambling. Then scan the open flats for Arne favourites including large numbers of spoonbill, the avocet (our logo species), curlew and even a long-distance visitor from Russia, the dark bellied brent goose. Your guide will be armed with a scope and will be keeping their eyes peeled for raptor species including hen harrier, marsh harrier, merlin or even a White-tailed eagle who may be seen hunting across the site. Don’t forget to bring your binoculars, but if you’re new to bird spotting then you can always hire a pair from our shop. |
