Nature Photography Workshop with Oliver Wright

Join Oliver Wright for a day's introduction to nature photography, including key things to think about, the basics of how a camera works, photo editing and putting that into practice out on the reserve. The workshop is suitable for beginner to intermediate level.

Please bring your camera with you- a phone camera, SLR or mirror-less camera.

The day will begin inside with an introduction to nature photography, things to think about and simplifying and de-mystifying how a camera works and explaining terms like aperture, iso and depth of field, accompanied by tea, coffee and refreshments. We'll then practice those basics and discuss further out on the nature reserve. Old Moor will provide a plethora of opportunities for photos using telephoto lenses, wide angle lenses for landscape shots or macro lens for insects.

After lunch, there will be an opportunity to review images and what you've learn in the morning before discussing developing from point and shoot or reactive photographs to seeing possible photographs and planning a project or specific shot. There will be further opportunity to explore and capture RSPB Old Moor before returning inside where Oliver will demonstrate photo editing.

This workshop is limited to just 10 adults so there will be plenty of opportunity for you to ask Oliver questions and discuss your techniques.

Oliver Wright Photography

Oliver Wright became a full-time professional photographer in February 2014, specialising in wildlife, macro and adventure photography.  His work has taken him around the world (Northern Sweden, Switzerland, Ecuador, etc) and included many exciting jobs from photographing the king of Sweden in the wilderness of Abisko to talking for Canon at 'The Photography Show' on Canon's main stage in 2019.

He has developed his own style of photography by using focus stacking in many genres and specialises in handheld stacking creating a unique style and set of images.

Oliver's time is currently spent between Yorkshire and Northern Sweden where he's a senior guide for Lights Over Lapland, giving him access to Europe's last great wilderness for part of the year.

Refreshments are included within your ticket, as is entry to RSPB Old Moor.  Parking is free at Old Moor.

Please bring lunch with you or make use of Old Moor's café for a tasty lunch to fuel your creativity. Please wear appropriate clothing and footwear as part of the workshop will be outside, exploring the nature reserve. This Creative Nature workshop programme is part of our National Lottery Heritage Funded project.

RSPB Old Moor is South Yorkshire’s best kept secret: a place to spot some wonderful nature, explore and discover with the kids or just walk around in peace and quiet.  There’s lots to do as a family with our new sensory garden, our playground, wild play areas and pond dipping (Easter to October).  Or, discover a hidden gem away from the hustle and bustle to enjoy nature and take a breather; you could even try our Natural Wellbeing trail.  Stop off at the café for hot food, cake and enjoy a hot drink with a view on our balcony with stunning views across the reserve.  Our shop sells a fantastic range of gifts for all ages, wrapping paper and cards and wildlife care products so you can create a nature haven in your own outdoor space and join us in giving nature a home.

Car parking is free.
