Visit the incredible RSPB Saltholme reserve between the 19 and 27 March for National Lottery Open Week and English Tourism Week, show us your National Lottery ticket or scratchcard to get free entry for up to two adults and 3 children*.
If you're new to birdwatching, Saltholme is the perfect place to start. These family-friendly wetlands have a helpful visitor's centre, hides and screens which let you get up close to beautiful birds such as water rail, yellow wagtails and terns. In March and April, lapwings can be seen performing their weird and wonderful displays and starting to nest on the grassland. Loads of sand martins and swallows return to Saltholme and spend their time skimming across the pool surfaces, catching insects whilst our ears are assailed with the sound of common terns and black headed gulls as they squabble and nest on our special cockleshell islands.
Saltholme's main trails are accessible and the reserve boasts a cafe with a stunning view and newly refurbished wildlife hides including one with automatic doors. Discover amazing views of Middlesbrough's iconic transporter bridge, Amish Kapoor's "Temenos" sculpture as well as an excellent view of Roseberry Topping. For families we have rugged pushchairs available to hire free of charge. There’s adventure play, events and activities at weekends and plenty of volunteers to help you make the most of your time, you’ll be able to discover more about Saltholme’s nature together and have lots of fun at the same time.
So whether you're a novice or expert birdwatcher, a photographer or family looking to share the wonder of nature you'll find plenty to enjoy at RSPB Saltholme. So join us with your National Lottery ticket or scratchcard to get free entry during National Lottery Open Week. Already a member? Great, why not bring a friend or two for free too?
