Summer Walking Safari

Our popular Summer Safari follows a route covering the full range of habitats at Lakenheath Fen. Follow our knowledgeable guides through reedbed, fen, wet grassland, riverbank and woodland on a trail to see as much wildlife as possible.

This longer walk (approximately 6.5 miles) takes you from one end of the reserve to the other and back again, via a circular route that covers every habitat we have. This should mean you see the maximum amount of wildlife, and the date falls at a time when our common cranes will have finished their breeding season, allowing us to walk beyond Joist Fen to Botany Bay. With luck, we will see our 'Big 5' of common crane, bearded tit, hobby, marsh harrier and bittern, not to mention other highlights such as cuckoo, great white egret and kingfisher. Lakenheath Fen is also home to otter, water vole, common lizard and grass snake as well as a wealth of butterflies and dragonflies- all possibilities on this walk!

You will have two knowledgeable guides with you who know the reserve like the back of their hand, so please ask as many questions as you like. There'll be time to pause to take in beautiful views, as well as for lunch and drinks breaks.

It may be very warm on the day of our walk so please wear sunscreen, bring a shady hat and plenty of water. Sturdy footwear and long trousers are recommended as terrain can be rough and you will be protected from the risk of biting insects too. If we have bad weather (very windy or wet) we will postpone the event for a week ahead.
