What's that Wader?

If you’ve just about got your basic wader ID in hand but want to take it to the next level, then we’re here to help. We know that identifying similar species and those lesser-known waders can be a little tricky and what better place to improve your wader knowledge than on one of the UK’s premier wetland sites.

During the morning we’ll cover all aspects of identification, including birds in flight and silhouette, plumage variations and common wader calls. Then it’s out onto the reserve for a practical session in the field.

You’ll gain a better insight into a variety of waders including

·       Large waders black v bar-tailed godwits, curlew v whimbrel, redshank v greenshank and spotted redshank

·       Sandpipers (common, wood, pectoral, green, curlew)

·       Small waders Temmicks v little stint, dunlin v knot

·       Woodcock, snipe, jack snipe

·       Ruff

We will also cover the importance of wetland habitats and explain how conservation work at Titchwell Marsh is future proofing  these areas for future generations of waders.

Binoculars are essential for this event but can be hired from the shop on arrival. A field scope will enhance your viewing capabilities but is not essential.

This event is aimed at an audience of 16 yrs plus.
