The Wonder of Trees at Radipole Lake

Trees give us oxygen, food, medicine and a whole lot more.

Trees are the heroes of nature so it’s a tragedy that the UK is one of the least wooded areas of Europe. We have just 12% woodland cover compared to around 37% cover in the rest of Europe. Native woodland covers just 4% of our landmass. The removal of almost all our trees and scrubs is the primary reason that the majority of our wildlife species are in dramatic decline (see 2013’s State of Nature report).

Take a walk with one of our expert guides around RSPB Radipole Lake, on this walk you will be able to explore the variety of habitats within this nature reserve and learn about tree identification. Explore how these habitats have evolved throughout time and how humans have impacted the environment in the UK and more specifically here in Weymouth.

Discover too the ecology that lives within the specific trees and identify fungi, invertebrates and birds who rely on this ecosystem. Who knew there was so much to discover about trees!
