Learn to film with your DSLR/ Mirrorless Camera - The Basics at RSPB Ham Wall

Capturing life on the move - a first-steps, hands-on guide to filming using your DSLR or Mirrorless camera at RSPB Ham Wall.

 18 April 2023, 9 am – 1 pm

Have you ever wondered what that little red movie button on your digital camera does or how to use it? Many photographers feel that the video functions of their cameras are an added extra they don’t need or understand and get more enjoyment just shooting stills. But modern cameras offer such high-quality video formats, it seems a shame not to take advantage of the facility and discover just what your camera can do to help you capture life on the move.

Spend a morning with us at RSPB Ham Wall and take your camera out onto one of the most important wildlife reserves in the country. This session, led by former BBC & ITV television journalist/cameraman, Steve Jennings, will cover the basics of filming. Nothing too technical - just a step-by-step guide to get started. And having an enjoyable time, too.

We’ll look at setting up your camera for video; the different formats your camera offers; the lens you use; how to compose and frame different types of shots; how to use your tripod and touch on filming for editing.

There are many more things to learn about, of course, such as microphones, sound, editing for example. But let’s start with the basics. Why not give it a try and learn how to use your camera to capture life on the move?

Learning outcomes:

 - an understanding of the video capabilities and formats of the camera

- Increased knowledge of camera settings in relation to capturing video

- an understanding of the lens, composition, framing and the different shots available

- know how to use a tripod for shooting video

- gain an insight into filming for editing
