While the depths of winter may be dark and cold, they are made so much brighter by the opportunities for some top-class seasonal birdwatching! RSPB Strumpshaw Fen in the winter months becomes a hive of activity for thrushes, finches, wildfowl and waders, many of which are only here for the season. Join us to learn more about them.
Our expert volunteer birder, Drew Lyness, will be your guide for a relaxed wander around RSPB Strumpshaw Fen reserve. He’ll introduce you to the birds of the woodland, meadow and fen habitats. Expect to gain some useful tips on finding and identifying both common and scarcer resident and overwintering bird species. This is a walk aimed at beginners and those wanting to build their skills, so don’t shy away from getting involved; all are welcome to our wonderful birdwatching community and remember, we all start somewhere.
We’ll be searching the wet woodland for the likes of Goldcrest, Treecreeper, Lesser Redpoll, Siskin and Brambling as well as more typical garden birds, then while out in the reedbed areas, we’ll hope to encounter Marsh Harrier, Bearded Tit, Kingfisher, Snipe and a range of duck species to get to grips with. Sounds great right? Your guide will have a scope at the ready to get you some close-up views of birds too, if they allow.
This walk comes with a complimentary hot drink which you can collect from our reception hide, where the walk will start, while having a chat with the guide and meeting other guests on the walk.
What to bring
Birdwatching experiences are enhanced every time when using a pair of binoculars, and we strongly recommend you bring them if you have them. Don’t worry if you don’t own a pair (or forget to bring them), as we have a couple of pairs that can be hired from our reception hide.
The reserve can be wet underfoot and slippery in places at this time of year so either wellies or high waterproof walking boots will be essential.
A hot drink is included at the beginning of the event. Otherwise please bring your own refreshments as we will be outside for most of the morning.
Tickets for non-RSPB members includes entry to the reserve.
We’re looking forward to seeing you there. All income raised from events like this supports the very special RSPB mid-Yare Valley reserves which includes Strumpshaw Fen and Buckenham Marshes.
