Guided Bird Watching - Islay's Winter Birdlife Festival

Ionad Chaluim Chille Ìle commands spectacular views over the Loch Indaal and throughout winter the loch is home to 10,000’s of wading and water birds. Greenland Barnacle and White Fronted geese roost and feed on the loch side, waders such as dunlin, bar tailed godwits, curlew and ringed plovers flock around the edges and shellduck, wigeon, whooper swans all dabble in the loch.

The list of species which can be seen from Ionad Chaluim Chille Ìle is extensive and we hope to help you experience this spectacle.  Throughout the festival RSPB and Ionad Chaluim Chille Ìle staff will be available to help you identify some of our more common waders and water birds as well as helping you distinguish between some of our tricker species.

We will have Gaelic and English speaking guides available and the bird watching sessions will take place from the balcony of Ionad Chaluim Chille Ìle. The sessions are open to all, no equipment necessary but we advise that warm clothing may be required. Rainy sessions will continue inside the college.
