Hawks to Harriers’ Raptor ID Walk

Discover the birds of prey that call RSPB Strumpshaw Fen their home during the summer months. During a slow walk with our expert wildlife guide, Drew Lyness, it’ll be eyes to the skies as we search for everything soaring, gliding, hovering and diving.

Expect to receive some useful hints and tips on how to search for, find and identify upwards of nine raptor species (hawks, harriers, buzzards, falcons and more) that can be recorded in the area at this time of year. High summer is a fantastic time to spot raptors, both resident and migratory, as they move through the Yare Valley. You’ll learn more about the habitats, behaviours, populations and identification of some of Norfolk’s most spectacular birds of prey including Sparrowhawk, Marsh Harrier, Hobby and even Osprey!

We’ll stop at a couple of excellent vantage points on the reserve to spend time scanning the skies in search of these ace aerial hunters. We may spot a wealth of other birds and wildlife during the walk and anything of interest will also be pointed out by our guide. With both familiar and much scarcer species on offer at this time of year, we hope we’ll be able to offer you a fantastic induction into the world of raptor watching. Bring it on!
