Orchid and flora guided walk at Newport Wetlands

At Newport Wetlands we have a beautiful array of orchids. Come along on our relaxing guided walk where we will show you the best places to spot and identify our wetland species. There are 5 to find! If we’re lucky, we will find our star species, the Bee Orchid!

Our grassy verges are bursting with other species of flora as well. Learn what our pollinators love and see some of the array of wildflowers we have here. Newport Wetlands Is a haven for wildflowers that begin to bloom at the start of spring, they’re an essential part of the UK landscape that’s sadly diminishing every year. For example, since the 1930s, the UK has lost 97% of our wildflower meadows. Wildflowers are a vital source of food for insects and birds, great for biodiversity, help with defence against flooding with their fantastic root systems and can help fight diseases. Native wildflowers have long been used for their healing properties and can contain compounds which have made a significant contribution to modern medicine. But, beware the plants that are poisonous!

Our walk will take in some of the best spots for the wildflowers and Orchids we see here at Newport Wetlands. The walk will be a slower pace and will include some standing around. The walk will last roughly 2 hours."
